Where Do We Find Joy

Joy and laughter...that was the theme of today at JASY camp! The smiles at camp were everywhere, on the campers and the volunteers! We finished our third very successful day of camp after a wonderful time in the pool, the football field, the volleyball court and the prettiest flower garden ever! We completed camp with a dance party due to a very hard rainstorm, so instead of team time, we held whole camp time.

Caribbean games was super fun today, especially the volleyball! All the kids bonded throughout the activities and visibly had a blast. It was cool to be able to successfully play a game with each group, even with the language barrier or other challenges. –Riley Lusk

Today in the pool we were using the rings to help the kids learn to blow bubbles and dive down in the pool. When the kids finally got them from the bottom they were so happy that the just kept on trying to do it again, and again, and again, and again. I also had a kid whose one mission was to be able to float and today he finally did it by himself and was so excited that he forgot what he was doing and sunk right back down. Afterwards he was just floating around while everyone else was diving underneath him to get the rings. It’s amazing to see the kids so happy just to be able to do something they set their minds to and also rewarding to see that you are a part of that happiness. – Maggie Murray

We ended the day with our volunteer appreciation dinner with a bit of swimming, then a delicious dinner (with ackee and salt fish for appetizer), with the Stella Maris Steel Band Drum playing tunes for us. We enjoyed getting to know one another and then danced until we were exhausted! What a joyful and wonderful day!!!

With much love,

The JASY 2017 Team
